Definition of Passive Voice
Passive voice is a form of sentence in which the subject of the sentence is the one who receives the action, not the one who takes the action.
The function of the passive voice
Passive voice is used to show interest in a person or object that is subjected to an action and not a person or object performing the action.
Example
- The house was built in 1654. (kita tertarik dengan rumahnya, bukan siapa yang membangunnya.)
- The road is being repaired. (kita tertarik dengan jalannya, bukan siapa yang melakukan perbaikan.)
Sometimes, using passive voice is because you don't know or don't want to say who did the action.
Example
- I noticed that a window had been left open.
- All the cookies have been eaten.
