Bullying itself is an activity of abuse of power or 'strength' which aims to hurt other people in physical, psychological or verbal form so that the victim will often feel pain, depression or trapped in despair. Usually, the perpetrator is a person who feels he has a higher or “stronger” position than the victim.
According to a study, most bullying is caused by a mentality that is built up by an environment (it can occur at school, home or work) so that it has a bad influence on a place that should be able to guarantee one's safety or comfort.
Many factors trigger a person to bully, including the most common are:
- Lack of self-confidence so that the offender wants to feel 'better' by hooding; ultimately giving them temporary satisfaction without realizing the prolonged effect on the victima
- Lack of empathy, they will usually seek justification if asked. However, there is no single reason that can justify an act that is not praiseworthy like bullying, lack of conscience is the main cause rather than any other excuse they are trying to make
- Seeking attention, the doer feels "great" by bullying others and getting the attention of many people. In fact, it could be a sign of a mental disorder that he is suffering from, such as acutenarcissistic tendencies that make him want to always be seen as the 'greatest'
- Bad environmental influences or other factors
In another study, it was stated that bullying would create a chain of fear in the environment where it happened because most people would be afraid to become the next 'victim'. Bullying will steal a sense of security that should be created in the environment where someone studies or works.
In extreme cases, victims are usually expelled from school because of extreme fear, depression, anxiety disorders and decreased self-esteem.
